The Gunflint Trail provides opportunities for hiking, birding, fishing, skiing, canoeing, camping and many other year-round events. Check out the Upcoming Events for 2006 to plan your trip to the Gunflint Trail. The Gunflint Trail is surrounded by the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and the Superior National Forest. It is 57 miles of a paved corridor through the north woods starting at the village of Grand Marais, west to Saganaga Lake at the Minnesota/Canada border. Moose, deer, fox and bears are common along the Trail. You can find skiing and hiking maps available at the link above. There is much more to explore on the website as well as on the Trail. Other highlights in the area can be found in the Grand Portage National Monument which is a National Monument and part of the National Park Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior. This is 710 acres within the Grand Portage Ojibwe Indian Reservation and was designated a National Monument in 1958. The Grand Portage is located in the northeastern tip of Minnesota’s Arrowhead region, 150 miles northeast of Duluth. The Grand Portage is open year round with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter and hiking the rest of the year. It is closed to snowmobiles, all terrain vehicles, horses and mountain bikes. August 11th through the 13th mark the annual Rendezvous Days and Pow Wow which recreate life in the 1700’s. The link above will also provide other information about campgrounds, food and supplies. Much, much more information is available on the site. The Superior National Forest was established by Teddy Roosevelt and covers three million acres. More than 445,000 acres are surface water and there are more than 2,250 miles of streams with many fish including walleye, trout, northern pike, and more. Moose, deer, black bears, and gray wolves (found only in Minnesota) roam the Forest. Cabins are available. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area was established in 1978 and provides 1,500 miles of routes for canoeing through streams and lakes. It is part of the Superior National Forest. Registration is required. Pets must have current vaccination records. Potatoes, firewood and live bait are prohibited from being brought across the border.
